Sketching, learning a new language and bicycling in Europe

For the past three years I have had the wonderful opportunity to travel in Europe on a bicycle with a wonderful new life partner.

Our now annual three month European bicycling lifestyle slows life down with frequent stops to sample the local coffee, tea, wines and beers as well as farm fresh veggies and local breads and cakes along the way. At our stops, I am increasingly confident in pulling out my sketchbook and capturing the moment. From time to time interested people will peek over my shoulder and sometimes even start a conversation. This opens the door for me to practice my emergent German.

This year I will be posting my sketching adventures here. I’ll also be trying to make the posts “bilingual”. Let’s see how that goes!

God. protect this house from Storm and wind – and from unfriendly people …
Gott schütze dieses Haus vor Sturm und Wind – und vor Menschen, die ungemütlich sind ……

We arrived in Lippstadt on Friday evening. We were tired but after a shower and a little nap we were ready for dinner. We ate fantastic Walleye at Hüselmanns Restaurant, The service was first class and the atmosphere was cozy. It is now my favorite restaurant in Lippstadt. The building was originally a farmhouse with a bakery and tavern (1725)

Wir kamen am Freitagnachmittag in Lippstadt an. Wir waren müde, aber nach einer Dusche und einem kurzen Nickerchen waren wir bereit fürs Abendessen. Wir aßen ein wunderbares Zander-Dinner im Restaurant Hüselmann. Der Service war erstklassig und die Atmosphäre gemütlich. Es ist mittlerweile mein Lieblingsrestaurant in Lippstadt. Das Gebäude war ursprünglich ein Bauernhof mit Bäckerei und Schänke (1725).

11 June 2025, Paderborn

Paderborn Markt, Paderborn market

Heute sind wir mit Andreas’ Schwester und Schwager nach Paderborn gefahren. Paderborn ist eine alte Stadt mit einem Dom und vielen anderen Sakralbauten. Heute gab es einen wunderschönen Markt, auf dem die Pflanzen, das Gemüse und das Obst fantastisch waren. Ich saß draußen in einem Café mit einem leckeren Minztee und habe meine Skizzen gemacht.

Today we went to Paderborn with Andreas’ sister and brother-in-law. Paderborn is an old city with a cathedral and many other religious buildings. Today there was a beautiful market where the plants, vegetables, and fruit were fantastic. I sat outside in a café with a delicious mint tea and did my sketches.

27 June

Jetzt ist es Zeit, aufzuholen. Am 13. Juni starteten wir von Druffel aus zu unserer Radreise in die Niederlande. Unser erster Stopp war Münster. Radweg und Wetter waren größtenteils perfekt. Die vielen Linden spendeten Schatten und die Wildblumen am Wegesrand waren wunderschön. Als wir uns Münster näherten, wurde es heiß und die Straßenbauarbeiten und der Verkehr waren etwas anstrengend. Trotzdem fanden wir unser Hotel und nach einer Dusche und einer kurzen Pause waren wir bereit für das abendliche Abenteuer.

It’s time to catch up. We left for our Netherlands bicycle trip on 13 June. Our first stop was Munster a d the bicycle route and weather were mostly perfect. The linden trees gave us shade and the wild flowered were spectacular. It wasn’t until we approached Munster that the heat and traffic became stressful. Despite that, we found our hotel and after a shower and a short rest we were ready for the evening adventure.
